My "Shabby Apple" Six

I have just recently been introduced to a vintage-inspired company called SHABBY APPLE and I just HAD to share with you all the cute things that are on my wish list!

First of all, these Tiffany blue bow heels. SUCH a perfect color for summer.... not to mention, I love the bow. I'm a detail-oriented person.

Another bow.  The perfect detail to a simple, staple black pencil skirt!

I also loved this sunshine yellow chiffon blouse!  You can't tell well from this picture... but the sleeves tie at the elbow, which sets it apart from another yellow blouse you might meet on the street.

More Tiffany blue, but this time in necklace form.  So simple and sweet, but what I loved most about this necklace is that you can choose between 16" or 18" chain!

Lauren Conrad said not too long ago that a shirt dress was 1 of 10 of the must-have dresses for every woman's closet! Well Shabby Apple has got several to choose from, but this one is my personal fave.  I love it paired with the red accessories.  The only thing that would make it better is if the sailboat and sunny day came with!

Shabby Apple even has home goods and gifts, like these adorable fridge magnets!

Check it out for yourself and tell me what's on YOUR wish list!
Happy shopping!

Happy Days Are Here Again!

I'm so so so sorry I have neglected you all for so long--- a week and a half now.  I'm sure many of you can relate when I say I have been finishing up with exams, celebrating Mother's Day, and enjoying the first sweet days of summer!

Necklace from Chico's Outlet/ Dress from Lucky Penny/ Target heels/ Lucky Brand statement ring

In case I haven't already mentioned it, I work at a Chico's Outlet.  We got this necklace probably in November and it has been priced at $5.97 for the last two months.  I finally admitted my like for this gaudy thing and my manager said "If you can figure out how to wear it, then go for it."  If I do say so myself, it I think it looks pretty cute with this dress!

Here, I have to brag on Austin.  You explain to the boy the rule-of-thirds ten minutes ago, and this is what he comes up with.  Pure fashion blog, compositionally awesome, phone photo magic.  So my camera died, and he knows nothing about photography and this is what he comes up with.  Lucky me.

I promise not to neglect you guys for that long EVER again.
At least until fall semester starts.

Trading Places

Meet Mekenzie.
She is usually the one behind the camera but she was kind enough to model for me this week!

Jeans from JC Penny/ Old Navy boots/ Shirt--an original design by yours truly :)
Fabric & trim from Mary Jo's in Gastonia

Isn't she cute?

As promised in my "S" is for... post, this is the shirt that I made for Spring Showcase this past semester!   I am pretty pleased with how it turned out and I plan on reusing the pattern and experimenting with prints and trims.  I must admit, it was strange being on the other side of the camera, trying to think like Mekenzie; but I'd say we both did pretty well.

It's Almost Here!

New York & Company cardigan/ Tee from Alloy.com/ J. Crew Outlet necklace and skirt/ Chico's Outlet belt/ Steve Madden flats

Summer is almost here! Two more weeks for me!  (We'll just pretend 4 summer classes aren't happening, for now).  Austin spent the weekend getting their boat de-winterized and you can't fathom how excited I am for some lake days!  Hopefully next time I sport this white skirt I won't be so transparent.

"S" is for.....

A sketch. A skirt. Stress. Set-backs. Struggling. Showcase. And finally..... success.

For my Flat Pattern class, we had to make a skirt.... any old skirt.
This is what I dreamed up.
AKA What I did instead of pay attention in Marketing that day.

And I was determined to execute my plan.
I showed Ms. Ray my sketch, and she suggested that I do a gathered top, and I was pretty upset because that is not what I envisioned.
But then my roommate-to-be, Ryan, helped me drape the pleats on a dress form.
I don't know if you can tell, but the pleats looked great on one side, and NOT-so-great on the other side.
BUT it was enough to show Ms. Ray what I really wanted.
So she suggested that I use [what felt like] a jillion separate strips to created the pleated look.
So I did.....

And it turned out pretty well....
Then I draped some muslin underneath the top skirt to get gathered look I was after.
I thought it looked so good that I didn't want to make it a high-low skirt (or mullet skirt, as I call it) anymore.  The pleats were enough drama.

So I cut out all the pleat pieces again, in my for-real fabric.
(Which was a lycra-sateen and lovely to work with).

Then I draped my for-real bottom skirt fabric on the dress form to see how it would look together....
.....and I didn't like it.

But lucky for me, we have a bunch of old prom dresses in the closet of our apparel lab and Ms. Ray agreed to let me use one of them.
So I cut the skirt off and hand stitched it to my top skirt....
....but then the frontal-wedgie (as shown) was the least of my problems.

It looked like Susie had fallen and scraped her knee at prom.....
See the scratch?
Ms. Ray tried to tell me it had to be a design element because the lines were too perfect... but my perfectionism couldn't handle it.
(As I was ripping the stitches out I hear Ms. Ray say "Are you struggling?  I love to see you struggle!"
It really put salt in my wound at the time, but I can say I learned from it now. Cliche, right?)
I had to find a new fabric for my bottom skirt.
Again.
So luckily, I got to go home and mom helped me get some new fabric.
Notice I still got to use the lining from the prom dress (luckily), and found a new blue fabric for the outside.

And finally the day of showcase.....
I think it turned out beautifully.
I made the cowl-neck to match, for showcase.

Close up! (Bracelet also from Charming Charlie)

Back view.

I was happy to have my parents, boyfriend, and two friends come support me at showcase!

I was also lucky to have two lovely models: Abby and Paige.
Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures with Paige....
.....but meet Abby! She was a trooper through long rehearsals.... and has perfect hair for a fishtail braid, don't you think?
She's modeling the vest I made... and I have to brag that I cut all the fringe.
(Thanks to Rachel for letting me use her rotary cutter!)
It was extremely tedious.
Also, special thanks for a Easter bunny named Colleen--- all those pins and that corner turner came in handy with the vest!

Pictures of the top I featured in showcase are to come!

Have You Been There?

Free People top/ J. Crew corduroy skinnies/ Heels from Lucky Penny/ Angel Court necklace courtesy of  Have You Been There?

Remember my "Friday Fun" post?  I won this Angel Court necklace from a pop culture blog called "Have You Been There?"   They (a couple named Mallory and Justin) cover everything from film to fashion to food.... and more!  A couple of my favorite posts include: a recipe for zucchini fries, mixing florals and stripes, and they have pretty great award show coverage. I finally received this necklace from a giveaway that was featured on their blog and had a chance to show it off.  Gorg, right?

Color Blocking Ain't Just For Easter Eggs!

Bamboo wedges from MC Adams- Boone, NC

Calvin Klein dress/ Necklace from MC Adams- Boone, NC

THIS picture was taken via Instagram for Android.  Is anyone else as excited as I am about that?

I hope everyone had wonderful Easter--I know I sure did!  It started out as me rolling out of bed way later than my alarm to find a basket with PEEPS in it (some people think they're gross--I love em!)  then heading to church to observe a lovely Easter service and seeing some of my favorite home-church friends.  Then lunch at Nanna's, where I used Easter as an excuse to eat BBQ (I choose not to eat red meat... doesn't mean I don't miss it) and it was so worth it.  Then went on to Nanny's, which is usually a madhouse on the holidays, but it was actually a really pleasant visit.  Maybe because I was distracted trying to get to know my brother's new lady friend--who was a sweetheart.  Kind of hoping he doesn't read this post, because I'm really counting my eggs before they hatch!
